All the lamps which are seen today are lightened they will extinguish one day, but only those who have lit up the lamp of meditation will be the ones who have the light and that is the reason that those who lit their lamp are called enlightened.

The lamp which we are talking about is the lamp of awareness, the lamp of inner light. There is only one thing to be done by a person and that is to get this realization. One thing for sure is that this realization will never happen without the right master. So if you want to still this restless mind and experience the joys of the inner world, you definitely have to befriend a master to whom you can surrender whom you can trust and love and in whose hands you can leave yourself to do whatever is required. In the absence of a realized master, a right way, a right technique is definitely going to be the most arduous thing to do, nearly impossible.

Normally then you are asked to take initiation ‘diksha‘ from a guru or a realized master. Initiation is not a ritual, which is supposed to be practiced to declare you a religious person. What they do while giving the initiation is normally, they would give you the mantra, which would be whispered in your ear, and then you are supposed to do the chanting of the mantra regularly: morning and evening. Those of you who have taken know so, but those of you who have not let me tell you what happens in this so called initiation.

Different sects and different religions have their own special mantras, a sound or syllables or words which they impart upon their disciples and now this mantra itself has been given so much importance that even those who give the mantra have forgotten or may be they themselves do not know that in initiation not only a mantra is handed over to the disciple, but the right way to use those sounds or syllables or words is imparted.

A mantra that is given without the right way or doing it, or without the mantra being charged, it will not be of much use to the person. It will never be satisfying, parroting of the mantra will never give you insight or the pure knowledge or the state of mind where you can proclaim that you have received true blessings and now your life is fulfilled. Many people are given a mantra to chant, and they repeat it like a parrot every morning and evening totally ignorant of other implications and applications of the mantra.

No wonder there are so many people, may be in millions, who have been initiated by some swami or sadhu or maharaj or a guru and yet you will not find a shred of happiness or joy in the life of these people. They are not to be blamed as they were given half baked information. And upon this they were blamed that their minds were not pure, they were sinful persons etc. Please remember that such gurus themselves are full of greed, lust and pride.

Every community has its own preferences of language. Like for a Hindu a mantra should be in Sanskrit, for a Christian it has to be in English or in Hebrew, for a Sikh it is in Punjabi. If a Hindu was given a mantra which was not in Sanskrit, then it will not seem powerful enough. But then remember Shakespeare said “what is there in the name?” So what you need is not another mantra from me, but the right way to sit in silence, a right way to extract the juice irrespective of what mantra it is.

Be attentive and alert and try to drink through the words. So being awake is the most important thing for any spiritual experience. It is not the question of how much unattached to this world you are, or how much love you have for God. But for any spiritual experience, the prerequisite is that you should be awake, or else how will you meditate?

So for me initiation means not imparting a mantra, but the awakening which the master gives with his or her touch presence, words and gestures. This mind can never be tamed forcefully; it has to be lovingly catered for, with the right vision. Generally speaking when the saints give diksha they do so regardless of what the sadhak’s - a spiritualist’s situation is and the methodology of meditation is never explained. The results are left to the follower, on basis of his love, detachment and determination. However, till the proper method is revealed, any amount of effort on part of the aspirant shall not bestow any results.
